Plastic & Perspex Scratch Removal Kit for Drills

Fine scratches and scuffs make plastic look tired and cheap. This drill-mounted plastic scratch removal kit takes them out in three stages and leaves a smooth, polished finish.

It is great for car and motorbike plastics, old toys, retro furniture, resin pieces and acrylic sheet.

What’s in the kit

• 1 x reverse-thread mandrel (6mm shank, fits any standard drill)
• 2 x 75mm blue radial bristle wheels (400 grit), no compound needed
• 2 x 75mm felt polishing wheels (12mm wide)
• 1 x bar of brown cutting compound
• 1 x bar of light brown (buff) polishing compound

• Acrylic and Perspex sheet, display cases and signs
• Resin castings and resin art
• Old toys, retro furniture and hard plastic surfaces

How to use it

1. Clean the plastic and dry it.
2. Fit a blue radial wheel on the mandrel. The bristles are directional: check the arrow on the side so the bristles brush the surface rather than bend back on themselves.
3. Work the radial wheel over the scratched area with no compound. Keep it moving to take out fine marks and prepare the surface.
4. Fit a felt wheel, load it with the brown cutting compound and work over the area.
5. Fit the second felt wheel, load it with the light brown polishing compound and polish to a shine.
6. Wipe off any residue with a soft cloth.

Good to know

• Plastic melts if it gets too hot. Keep the wheel moving, use light pressure and keep reloading compound to reduce friction.
• Run at under 3,000 RPM.
• Keep one felt wheel for each compound.
• Test on a hidden area first.

Questions

Will it remove deep scratches?

It is designed for fine lines, scuffs and light scratches. Deep gouges may need a coarser abrasive first, such as Micro-Mesh.

Can I use it on headlights?

It will work on small plastic parts, but for headlight lenses we recommend our Micro-Mesh headlight kits, which are made for the job.

Why is my plastic going soft or smeared?

It is getting too hot. Lower the speed, lighten the pressure and keep the wheel moving.

Safety

Always follow your drill’s instructions and wear eye protection and gloves. Tie back loose clothing and hair, work in a well-ventilated area and clean up dust and compound residue afterwards. Test on a hidden area before you start.
