How to polish frets
- Mask the fretboard between the frets with low-tack tape to protect the wood.
- Work along each fret with a Flexifile, starting with a middle grade and finishing with the finest.
- You are polishing, not levelling, so use light pressure and don’t change the fret profile.
- Remove the tape and wipe the frets with a soft cloth.
- If the fretboard is unfinished rosewood or ebony, condition it before restringing.
The finest Micro-Mesh grades can also take light haze out of gloss finishes. Test on a hidden area first, as some vintage finishes are very thin.
Common questions
Will this level my frets?
No. It polishes the fret surface. Levelling and crowning need specialist tools.
Does it work on stainless steel frets?
Yes. Stainless frets take a little longer but polish to a lovely finish.
How often should I polish frets?
Whenever they look dull or feel scratchy, often at a string change.
