Can the scratch be polished out?
Most modern cars have a thin layer of clear lacquer over the colour. Scratches that only sit in that clear coat can usually be removed. Try the fingernail test: if your nail doesn’t catch, the scratch is probably in the clear coat. If it catches, or you can see primer or bare metal, it needs touch-up paint or a body shop.
How to do it
Wash and dry the area. Work wet with the finest grade that removes the mark, keeping to a small area. Step up through the finer grades, then polish back to a full gloss. Clear coat is thin, so go gently and check your progress often.
Common questions
Can I remove swirl marks?
Light swirl marks, yes. Use the finest grades and finish with a fine polish.
Will it work on matt paint?
No. Matt and satin paint finishes should not be sanded or polished.
Do I need a machine polisher?
No. The clear coat kit is used by hand. If you have a polisher, a wool pad can speed up the final polishing stage.
