Plastic is soft, so the trick is working through finer and finer grades. Start with an abrasive just coarse enough to remove the scratch, then use each finer grade to remove the marks left by the one before. The last grades leave a surface so fine it looks clear again.
Hand kits are best for small items, edges and curves. For larger panels, such as boat windows or headlights, a drill kit saves a lot of time and effort.
Acrylic (Perspex, Plexiglas, Lucite), polycarbonate, cast resin, fibreglass gelcoat and most hard plastics. Very soft or textured plastics are not suitable.
Micro-Mesh works best wet, with a little water and a drop of washing-up liquid. It keeps the abrasive clean and stops the surface heating up.
Start with the coarsest grade in the kit and spend longer on it. If you can catch the scratch with a fingernail, expect it to take a few passes.
