Why sanded resin looks cloudy
After sanding a pour flat, resin looks milky because the surface is covered in fine scratches. Each finer grade replaces them with smaller ones until they are too small to see, and the resin turns clear again.
- Make sure the resin is fully cured. Soft resin clogs abrasives and won’t polish.
- Wet sand through the grades in order, rinsing between each so no coarse grit is left behind.
- Finish with a liquid polish for full clarity.
River tables and big pours
For large flat surfaces, use Micro-Mesh sheets on a sanding block or discs on a random orbital sander, and work evenly across the whole surface. Jewellery, coasters and small castings are easiest with soft pads and Flexifiles.
Common questions
Why is my resin cloudy after sanding?
Fine scratches scatter the light. Keep working through finer grades and it will clear.
Should I sand resin wet or dry?
Wet. It keeps the abrasive clean, stops resin dust and helps you see progress.
How long should resin cure before polishing?
Until it is fully cured. Check your resin’s cure time, which can be several days for deep pours.
