How to remove scratches from plastic, using this simple plastic polishing & repair tool

Here’s how to remove scratches from plastic:

  1. Clean the plastic: Before polishing, it’s important to remove any dirt, grime, or debris from the plastic. Use a mild soap and water to clean the plastic, or a specialized plastic cleaner if necessary. Be sure to dry the plastic thoroughly before moving on to the next step.
  2. Start with the Blue Radial wheels, these are directional, so they require to be spun so the flaps are not bent back on themselves but smoothly brush the surface (see directional arrows on the side of the wheel). These Blue Radial wheels do not require compound, so use direct into the plastic surface.
  3. Keep the wheels moving, do not allow to dwell on one spot. These will take out fine marks and scratches and prepare the surface for polishing. The idea here is to blend the scratches or gouges away, ready for polishing.
  4. Prepare the polishing compound: Plastic polishing kits come with two compounds, one course, and one fine. Use the felt wheels with the darker brown compound first as this is for cutting. We recommend clamping the compound to a G clamp.
  5. Apply the polishing compound: Spin the wheel in your drill against the cutting compound to load compound onto the wheel. Compound will melt and coat the wheel. Work over the plastic in a light figure of eight or circular, motion ensuring you keep moving.
  6. Wipe off the excess compound and repeat the previous step using the lighter compound. This will return your plastic to a high shine.
  7. Once you’ve finished polishing, wipe off any remaining compound with a clean, dry cloth.
  8. Enjoy your scratch-free plastic!

Safety

Note: Always wear gloves and safety glasses and be sure to work in a well-ventilated area, as some polishing compounds can be toxic. Also, keep in mind that polishing can remove a thin layer of the plastic, so it’s important not to over-polish.

Important considerations when remove scratches from plastic

When polishing plastics it is important to not let it get too hot as it might melt the plastic. Do not dwell in one spot and keep the wheel moving. Keep reloading the felts with compound by spinning against the bar, this will reduce the friction.

ALWAYS test the cleaning disks on a test surface before use. Abrasive disks can cause damage to soft and pliable surfaces.
