The brightwork order
Most restorations follow the same order: strip back corrosion and old lacquer, remove scratches with a cutting mop and compound, then polish to a shine.
- Aluminium engine covers and casings respond brilliantly. Use non-ferrous compounds.
- Stainless exhausts and trim polish well with ferrous compounds.
- Chrome is a thin plating. Polish it gently and never cut through it.
For large flat parts like engine covers, an angle grinder kit saves hours. For fiddly parts and tight corners, a drill kit gives more control.
Common questions
Can I polish lacquered engine covers?
Not until the lacquer is removed. Strip it first, then polish the bare metal.
Drill kit or angle grinder kit?
A drill kit for small parts and detail. An angle grinder kit for larger flat areas, used with light pressure and a steady hand.
Can polishing fix pitted chrome?
No. Pitting goes through the plating and needs re-chroming.
