From rusty to ready
Old tools are often better made than new ones, and rust is usually only skin deep.
- Brush off loose dirt and flaking rust.
- Strip rust and scale with coarse abrasive discs or a heavy-duty nylon mop.
- Smooth the surface with finer grades. Stop at a satin finish for a working tool, or polish for a bright one.
- Wipe bare metal with oil or wax straight away, because freshly cleaned steel rusts quickly.
- Sand and re-oil wooden handles to finish the job.
Common questions
Will it remove deep rust?
It strips surface rust and scale well. Deep pitting will still show once the rust is gone.
Is it safe to use on blades?
Yes on the flats and bodies of tools. Don’t run a mop over a cutting edge. Sharpen edges separately.
How do I stop rust coming back?
Oil or wax the bare metal and store tools somewhere dry.
