Small 4x1 Polishing Compound Bars for Metals and Plastics
Small 4×1 polishing compound bars are compact Lea compounds, approximately 100g each. They are an economical way to polish small items, try a compound before buying a full-size bar, or equip a student or hobby workshop.
The range covers seven bars that work as cutting and finishing pairs for each material: non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals and stainless steel, precious metals, and plastics and veneers. Mirrormax (White) completes the range as a high-gloss bar for all materials.
Each bar is either a cutting or a finishing compound. Cut first to remove scratches, clean the work, then finish with the matching bar on a separate felt or mop.
For a worked example, read How to Polish Copper, or see How to Use Polishing Compounds for the full process.
4×1 Compound Pairing Chart: Choose Your Bars
Choose the material first, then order the cutting bar and the finishing bar together.
| Material | Cut With | Finish With |
|---|---|---|
| Non-ferrous metals: aluminium, brass, copper, bronze | Tripmax (Brown) | Blumax (Blue) |
| Ferrous metals: steel, stainless steel, titanium, chrome, special alloys and the hardest metals | Abramax (Black) | Chromax (Pink) |
| Precious metals: gold and silver | Tripmax (Brown) | Starmax (Rouge) |
| Plastics, resins and veneers | Tripmax (Brown) | Plastimax (Buff) |
| All materials | – | Mirrormax (White) for a high-gloss finish |
Colour names refer to the Lea 4×1 range only. Bars of the same colour in other ranges are formulated differently, so compare compounds by their stated use, not by colour alone.
How to Use Small Compound Bars
Cut, clean, then finish.
Use one felt or mop for the cutting bar and a separate one for the finishing bar.
- Prepare the surface. Remove deeper scratches with abrasives before compounding.
- Cut. Load the cutting bar (Tripmax or Abramax) lightly onto a firmer polishing mop or felt polishing tool, and work the surface until the scratches are removed.
- Clean. Remove compound residue with Solvent Cleaner Spray so the cutting compound is not carried into the finishing stage.
- Finish. Load the finishing bar onto a softer, dedicated felt or mop and polish to the final finish.
- Load little and often. Hold the bar briefly against the running felt or mop rather than overloading it.
For hand polishing, apply a small amount to a Micro-Mesh Cotton Polishing Cloth. Wear suitable eye protection when machine polishing.
Moving Up to Full-Size Bars
The 4×1 bars are Lea’s small-bar range. Unless stated, the full-size bars below are not the same compound in a larger size: they are the closest full-size options for the same job.
| Small Bar | Closest Full-Size Option | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tripmax (Brown) | Apollo Tripoli | A different Tripoli formulation for the same cutting stage |
| Abramax (Black) | Metal Cutting Compounds such as Ferrocut 3050 or Abracut | Choose by cut and colour rating |
| Blumax (Blue) and Chromax (Pink) | Metal Polishing Compounds and Stainless Steel Polishing Compounds | Mirror finishing bars for non-ferrous and ferrous metals |
| Starmax (Rouge) | Rouge Polishing Compound for Precious Metals or Dialux Rouge | Different bars for the same finishing stage |
| Plastimax (Buff) | Menzerna GW16 or Dialux White | Plastics finishing compounds |
| Mirrormax (White) | Lea FF9 Ultimate Finishing Bar | Very similar usage and properties to Mirrormax |
Operating Guidance
- Inspect the felt or mop before use and replace it if worn, loose or contaminated.
- Fit the felt or mop securely to a suitable spindle, mandrel or machine and use the guarding provided.
- Start at a moderate speed and use light pressure; excess pressure builds heat, especially on plastics.
- Keep a separate felt or mop for each bar to avoid cross-contamination.
- Wear eye protection and use extraction where polishing dust is produced.
