Reusable Holders for Precision and Needle Files
The FH-40 and VPL-B are reusable file holders designed to securely grip precision files with compatible 3–4 mm shanks. Adding a dedicated handle provides a larger, more comfortable gripping surface than holding the file shank directly, helping the operator maintain control during detailed manual filing and finishing.
Although commonly used as needle file holders, compatibility is determined by the diameter and shape of the file shank. They can therefore be used with a range of needle files, diamond files, abrasive file carriers and other precision files with suitable shanks.
Choose the FH-40 for a quick-action securing and release mechanism, or the VPL-B for a traditional screw-tightened grip. Both models are supplied individually without a file.
Why Use a Precision File Holder?
Improved Grip, Comfort and Control
The larger handle provides a more comfortable and secure gripping surface than the exposed shank of a small precision file, helping the operator guide the file with controlled strokes during detailed or extended work.
Reusable Across Compatible Files
The holder can be retained and transferred between compatible files, allowing different file shapes, cuts or abrasive formats to be used without replacing the handle.
Secure File Retention
Both models grip a compatible file shank securely, helping to reduce unwanted movement between the file and holder during use.
Choose the FH-40 or VPL-B File Holder
Both holders accept compatible precision-file shanks measuring approximately 3–4 mm in diameter. Choose according to your preferred securing mechanism and how frequently you expect to change files.
| Model | Securing Method | Choose If You Prefer |
|---|---|---|
| FH-40 | Quick-action pull-to-secure and release mechanism | Users who regularly change between compatible files and want a quick, straightforward holder |
| VPL-B | Screw-tightened end secures the file shank | Users who prefer a traditional reusable handle with a manually tightened grip |
Both options are sold individually.
Files and abrasive carriers are not included.
Compatible Precision Files
The FH-40 and VPL-B are most commonly used with needle and precision files, but they are not restricted to one file construction or abrasive type. Compatibility depends on whether the file has a suitable 3–4 mm shank that can be secured correctly by the holder.
Precision and Needle Files
Use with compatible Vallorbe precision needle files for controlled shaping, deburring and finishing of small components and detailed features.
Diamond Needle Files
Suitable for compatible diamond needle files, including files used on hard metals, ceramics, glass and other suitable materials.
Quick-Zip File Carriers
The holders can also be used with compatible Quick-Zip files, which hold replaceable self-adhesive abrasive strips for controlled hand finishing.
Other Compatible Precision Files
Other file types may also be suitable where the shank can be inserted and secured correctly. Check compatibility before use.
These holders are not intended for larger 6–8 inch engineering hand files.
Larger files require a suitably sized file handle.
Precision Engineering, Trade and Workshop Applications

How to Fit and Use the File Holder
- Check that the file shank is clean, undamaged and compatible with the selected holder.
- Insert the file shank into the holder to an appropriate depth.
- Secure the file using the FH-40 quick-action mechanism or the VPL-B screw-tightened end.
- Before filing, check that the file is held securely and cannot move unexpectedly within the handle.
- Use controlled strokes appropriate to the file type, material and component.
- Release the securing mechanism before removing or changing the file.
Safety Note:
Do not use a damaged holder or file.
Ensure the file is securely fitted before applying pressure, and wear suitable eye protection when filing.
