Chrome Polishing Kit for Drills (Mops, Mandrel & Compound)

Chrome loses its sparkle under water marks, road grime and light oxidation. This drill-mounted chrome polishing kit brings back the deep, bright shine on car and motorbike chrome, bathroom taps and vintage trim.

Chrome plating is thin, so this kit is about polishing, not cutting. Start with the soft mops and let the compound do the work.

What’s in the kit

• 1 x reverse-thread mandrel (6mm shank, fits any standard drill)
• 1 x 75mm dry sisal mop (coarse, for removing scratches and marks)
• 1 x 75mm white stitched mop (medium, for refining the finish)
• 1 x 75mm soft WDR mop (for the final shine)
• 1 x bar of black cutting compound for ferrous metals and chrome
• 1 x bar of pink polishing compound for ferrous metals and chrome

What you can use it on

• Chrome bumpers, grilles and trim on classic cars
• Motorbike chrome: exhausts, mudguards, handlebars
• Bathroom taps, shower heads and fittings
• Bar stools, furniture legs and lamps

How to use it

1. Clean the chrome with warm soapy water and dry it.
2. Fit the white stitched mop to the mandrel and the mandrel to your drill.
3. Load the mop with pink polishing compound and work over the chrome with light pressure, keeping the mop moving.
4. Change to the soft WDR mop with pink compound for the final shine.
5. Only use the sisal mop and black compound on stubborn marks, and very lightly. Heavy cutting can wear through the plating.
6. Buff away residue with a clean, soft cloth.

Good to know

• Works with a standard corded or cordless drill, an air tool, or any rotary tool that takes a 6mm spindle.
• Run at under 3,000 RPM. Faster speeds wear the mops quickly and heat the metal.
• Keep one mop for each compound so they don’t cross-contaminate.
• Pitted or flaking chrome can’t be fixed by polishing. It needs re-plating.

Questions

Can polishing fix pitted chrome?

No. Pitting goes through the plating. Polishing will brighten the surrounding chrome, but the pits will remain.

Can I use it on chrome-effect plastic?

No. Chrome-effect plastic has a very thin coating that polishing will remove.

Is it the same as the steel kit?

The contents are the same. Chrome needs a lighter touch, so follow the chrome steps above.

Always follow your drill’s instructions and wear eye protection and gloves. Tie back loose clothing and hair, work in a well-ventilated area and clean up dust and compound residue afterwards. Test on a hidden area before you start.
