How to Remove Light Scratches from Car Paint

A scratch down the side of your car feels like a body shop job. Often it isn’t. Most modern cars have a layer of clear lacquer over the colour, and scratches that only go into that clear coat can be sanded level and polished out by hand.

Step one: the fingernail test

Run a fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail glides over it, the scratch is almost certainly in the clear coat only, and you can fix it. If your nail catches, or you can see a different colour, grey primer or bare metal in the scratch, it has gone through the clear coat. That needs touch-up paint or a professional repair.

What you need

• A clear coat repair kit such as the Micro-Mesh Clear Coat Paint Repair Kit
• A spray bottle of water with a drop of car shampoo
• A fine finishing polish such as Micro-Finish
• Clean microfibre cloths and masking tape

Step by step

1. Wash and dry the panel. Any grit left on the paint will make new scratches.
2. Mask a small box around the scratch so you keep the repair tight.
3. Start with the finest grade that works. Wet the area and sand lightly along the length of the scratch. Check often. Clear coat is thin.
4. Stop as soon as the scratch has gone. The area will look dull and hazy. That is normal.
5. Work through the finer grades to refine the haze, keeping everything wet.
6. Polish by hand or with a machine polisher until the gloss matches the rest of the panel.
7. Protect the area with wax or sealant.

Mistakes to avoid

• Sanding too big an area. Keep it just around the scratch.
• Pressing hard. Let the abrasive do the work.
• Sanding matt or satin paint. Those finishes can’t be polished without turning glossy.

Can all car scratches be polished out?

No. Only scratches that stay in the clear coat. If your fingernail catches, the scratch is too deep to polish out.

Light swirl marks usually only need the finest grades and a good polish.
