How to polish copper and brass
Tarnish on copper and brass is a thin layer of oxidation, and a drill-mounted mop with the right compound lifts it in minutes.
- Wash the piece in warm soapy water to remove grease and dirt.
- Load the cutting mop with compound and work over the whole surface at a steady speed.
- Switch to the soft mop and finishing compound for the final shine.
- On hammered or embossed pieces, keep the mop moving so you don’t soften the detail.
- Finish with a thin coat of wax or lacquer to slow down re-tarnishing.
Common questions
Can I polish lacquered brass?
Lacquered brass needs the old lacquer removing first, otherwise the mop can’t reach the metal underneath. A lacquer stripper or fine abrasive will do this.
Can I polish copper pans?
Yes, the outside of copper pans polishes very well. Don’t polish the tin or steel lining on the inside.
Will it work on a copper bar top?
Yes. For large flat areas like bar tops and hoods, the drill kits save hours compared with hand polishing.
