How to Repair Scratches and Burns on a Corian Worktop

One of the best things about Corian and other solid surface worktops is that they can be repaired. Unlike laminate, the colour and pattern run all the way through, so scratches, stains and light scorch marks can be sanded away and the finish restored. Fitters do it all the time, and with the right kit you can do it yourself.

First, check your finish

Solid surface worktops are finished matt, satin or gloss. Matt is the most common in kitchens. The finish decides where you stop in the repair, so compare an untouched area with the damaged one before you start. A useful trick is to test the kit on a hidden area, such as inside a cupboard cut-out, to see which grade matches.

What you need

• A solid surface repair kit such as our Corian scratch repair kit, which has four double-sided Micro-Mesh pads from 300 to 12000 and a Micro-Gloss polish
• A damp cloth
• For heavier marks, the Micro-Mesh burn kit

Step by step

1. Clean the worktop and dry it.
2. Pick your starting grade. Use the coarsest grade needed to remove the mark and no coarser. Deep scratches and scorch marks start at 300. Light scratches can start finer.
3. Work wider than the damage in small circles, feathering out into the surrounding area so the repair blends in.
4. Move through each grade, wiping the dust away between each so you can see progress.
5. Stop at your finish. For matt, stop at a middle grade. For satin, go a little further. For gloss, work to 12000 and buff in the Micro-Gloss.

What can’t be fixed at home

Deep burns that have blistered or cracked the surface, chips on edges and cracks near sinks and hobs are best left to a professional solid surface repairer. And these kits are not for granite or engineered quartz, which are far harder.

Questions

Can I use sandpaper on Corian?

You can, but ordinary sandpaper leaves deeper, uneven scratches. Cushioned Micro-Mesh pads blend and finish far more evenly.

Will the repair show?

Blended over a wider area and finished to the right grade, a repair is usually very hard to spot.

Can I remove a cup ring or stain?

Yes. Most stains sit near the surface and sand away with the finer grades.
