How to Remove Scratches from Caravan and Motorhome Windows

MICROMESH-CLEAR-SEAS

Scratched and hazy windows spoil the view from a caravan or motorhome and make the whole van look older. Replacement windows are expensive and fiddly to fit. The good news is that almost all caravan and motorhome windows are acrylic, and acrylic polishes beautifully.

Why acrylic windows scratch

Acrylic is light, tough and won’t shatter, but it is softer than glass. Brushing off dry dirt, overhanging branches and the wrong cleaning cloths all leave fine scratches. Sunlight adds haze over time.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Wash the window with plenty of water. Never wipe dry grit across acrylic.
  2. Assess the scratch. If your fingernail catches, start with the coarsest grade in the kit. If not, start finer.
  3. Work wet, in straight strokes, over an area a little larger than the scratch.
  4. Change direction with each grade so you can see when the previous marks are gone.
  5. Finish with the finest grade, then polish and apply anti-static cream to repel dust.

What can’t be polished out

Deep crazing, a network of fine cracks running into the panel, can’t be polished away because it goes too deep. Light surface crazing often improves a lot, though.
