How to Polish Glass

How to Polish Glass

Polishing glass, or restoring glass, can be a rewarding and satisfying task, but it requires the right tools and techniques to achieve a professional finish. In this article, we will explain how to polish glass using a polishing tool, also known as a glass polisher or glass polishing wheel.

Using the right tool for polishing glass

The first step in polishing glass is to choose the right polishing tool for the job. There are several different types of glass polishers available, including rotary polishers, orbital polishers, and flex shaft polishers. Each type of polisher has its own unique set of features and benefits, so it is important to choose the right one for your needs.

You can use various different types of polishing mops and wheels. Alternatively, Revive Tool sells a complete Polishing Glass Kit, to help clean and restore glass.

Compound & Buffing Glass

Once you have chosen a polishing tool, the next step is to gather the necessary materials. You will need a polishing compound, a buffing pad, and a clean cloth.

The polishing compound is a fine abrasive that is used to remove scratches and blemishes from the glass surface. The buffing pad is a soft, absorbent material that is used to apply the polishing compound to the glass.

The Method for Polishing Glass

To begin polishing the glass, first clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris.

Next, apply a small amount of polishing compound to the buffing pad, and use the polishing tool to spread it evenly over the glass. Work in small circular motions, applying gentle pressure to the glass surface.

As you polish the glass, you will notice that the polishing compound begins to turn dark and cloudy. This is a sign that it is removing scratches and blemishes from the glass.

Continue polishing until the glass is smooth and shiny, and then wipe away any excess polishing compound with a clean cloth.

If you are using the Revive Tool Glass Restoration Kit:

How to assemble the glass restoration kit

Sandwich the wheel between the two washers and mount onto the mandrel.

Tighten the reverse thread nut (the reverse thread on the tool means it won’t come undone as the tool spins on your drill).

Attach the end of the mandrel to your drill. The mandrel fits most basic drills.

How to use the glass restoration kit

Mix the pumice with water to make a paste similar to single cream. Add a little of the paste to the surface and work in a figure of 8 motion with the felt wheel.

It should take roughly 3-5 mins. Keep moving to avoid heating the glass. Too much heat and the glass may shatter. Keep adding a sprinkling of water and check you are not heating the glass too much.

Using a fresh Wheel, repeat these steps with the Cerium Oxide (peach powder) to restore the polish. Always wear a mask and eye protection when handling powders and polishing (see safety advice below).

ALWAYS test the glass restoration kit on a test surface before use.

Restoring or Polishing Glass

In conclusion, polishing glass can be a rewarding and satisfying task, but it requires the right tools and techniques to achieve a professional finish.

By choosing the right polishing tool and using a polishing compound and buffing pad, you can easily remove scratches and blemishes from glass and restore its natural shine.
